CUG for Local Self-Governance Elections

(Tbilisi, January 29, Civil Georgia) – The Parliamentary faction Citizens’ Union of Georgia (CUG) calls for local self-governance elections to be held at least in June 2002.

The faction held a meeting concerning the issue on January 29. CUG is for governors of the regions and city mayors’ election. Now the President appoints governors and mayors.

The faction member and former Parliamentary Chairman Zurab Zhvania stated that amendments should be made in the existing law on self-governance.

Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Self-Governance and the Regional Policy Roman Kusiani told Civil Georgia on January 29, that the amendments will be ready within the week.
