Real Fight Against Corruption Started – President Says

(Tbilisi, February 18, Civil Georgia) – The last government’s meeting demonstrated that the real fight against corruption started, Georgian President Shevardnadze stated in his Monday radio broadcast on February 18.

President dismissed Mtskheta-Mtianeti Governor and several Gamgebelis [heads of provincial districts] accused in corruption at the extended government’s meeting on February 10.

Opponents of the President are skeptical about Eduard Shevardnadze’s intention to fight corruption.

MP Petre Tsiskarishvili, representative of reformers’ wing stated recently that the President’s decision to sack Governor and Gamgebelis was only political move.

Allegedly President dismissed only those provincial officials who sympathise with the former Parliamentary Chairman Zurab Zhvania.
