Georgian MP Offers to Respond Russia with Recognition of Sovereignty of Chechnya

(Tbilisi, March 1, Civil Georgia) – Chairman of the Parliamentary faction Traditionalists Akaki Asatiani stated at the Parliamentary session on March 1, that in case Russian Duma Council Committee on Foreign Affairs considers recognizing breakaway Abkhazia’s independence, Georgian Parliament also should discuss possibility of recognizing sovereignty of Chechnya.

Majority of MPs agreed with the proposal. Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze expressed hope that Russian Duma Committee will not hold hearing on the issue.

Dmitry Rogozin, head of the Russian Duma Council Committee on International Affairs announce on February 28 that that if the U.S. troops are engaged in Georgia, Russia would consider recognizing Abkhazian independence on March 5 Committee session.

Georgian President Shevardnadze said on February 28 in televised interview that the statements of the Russian parliament officials are “stupid.”
