Russian MPs not to Discuss Issue of Recognizing Abkhazian Sovereignty

(Tbilisi, March 5, Civil Georgia) – Chairman of Russian Duma Council Genadi Selezniov stated on March 4 that MPs will not discuss issue of possible independence of breakaway Abkhazia.

Chairman of Foreign Affairs Committee of Russian Council Dmitri Ragozin stated in late February that the Committee would discuss the issue on March 5 as the response to the US military presence in Georgia.

Genadi Selezniov stated that such statements of Russian politicians were based on the emotions. 

On March 1 Russian President Vladimer Putin assured his Georgia counterpart Eduard Shevardnadze that Russia will never recognize sovereignty of the breakaway republics of Abkhazia and South Osetia.
