Shevardnadze Hopes the World Bank will not Reduce Assistance

(Tbilisi, March 11, Civil Georgia) – “The World Bank will assess the recent trends in the Georgian economy. I am sure assessment will reveal the success achieved during the last months in economy, so the World Bank may even increase assistance to Georgia,” President Shevardnadze stated in his radio broadcast on March 11.

Judy O’Connor, the World Bank South Caucasus Country Unit Director visited Georgia on March 7-8. She confirmed that the World Bank intends to reduce financial assistance to Georgia by 20% from 2003.

The World Bank is not satisfied with implementation of reforms and with high degree of corruption in Georgia.

“The job of the World Bank is to reduce poverty in its member countries. I have to say that Georgia has not been successful in that objective,” Judy O’Connor stated on March 8.
