Opposing CUG Factions Clash on Party Heritage

(Tbilisi, March 18, Civil Georgia) – “Citizens’ Union of Georgia [CUG] will never go into opposition,” Governor of Kvemo Kartli region Levan Mamaladze stated on March 18. Mamaladze is the leader of the CUG faction opposing reformers wing of the party led by Zurab Zhvania.

Supporters of Mamaladze, mainly governors, heads of provincial districts and pro-Presidential Parliamentary factions held a meeting and called the reformers to leave the party.

Reformers’ wing of the CUG announced recently that the party should go into opposition.

President Shevardnadze, who is the CUG member, condemned intention.
