Parliament to Discuss Draft on Local Self-Governance Elections

(Tbilisi, March 27, Civil Georgia) – Georgian Parliament is to discuss draft law on local self-governance elections on March 27.

At the meeting between President Shevardnadze and the Parliamentarians on March 26 Eduard Shevardnadze stated that elections should be held not later than June 2002. Most of the Parliamentary factions’ leaders agreed with the President.

On March 24 majority of the Parliamentary factions agreed that that city mayors and provincial governors should be elected and not appointed by the President as it is now.
