Russian Official Says Missiles Found in Chechnya Belong to Georgia

Commander of the combined group of forces in Chechnya Lt-Gen Vladimir Moltenskoy stated on April 9 that the Igla surface-to-air missile found in Chechnya’s Vedeno district belonged to Georgian Armed Forces.

Russian media sources report quoting Russian military official that the missile system was left in Georgia after the Soviet troops pulled out of Georgia, when the Soviet Union collapsed.

This is not the fist accusation of this kind. Russia blames Georgia in supplying weapons to the Chechen rebels.

In March Russian military officials also reported that the Igla missile system found in Tsa-Vedeno district of Chechnya also belonged to the Georgian armed forces.

Georgian Defense Ministry issued a statement on April 5 denying the accusation. The statement said that the Armed Forces of Georgia has no Igla surface-to-air missiles at all.
