No Alternative to Peace Solution of Abkhazian Conflict – President Says

(Tbilisi, May 13, – “As far as I am the President of Georgia I will do my best to prevent a new war in Abkhazia,” Eduard Shevardnadze state at the news briefing on May 13.

He said that there is no alternative to the peace solution of the Abkhazian conflict, “or to determine Abkhazia’s status within the Georgian state.”

President Shevardnadze commented on the reports that he gave the US administration the written guarantee that the US trained Georgian anti-terrorist units will not be used in the Abkhazian conflict.

“I have not gave any written guarantees, as my public statement is a stronger one than a written guarantee,” the President said.
