Shevardnadze Warns on Threat of Populism

(Tbilisi, May 26, Civil Georgia) – “The populism and so called nationalism jeopardize democratic values of Georgia,” President Shevardnadze stated in address dedicate Independence Day on May 26.

Eduard Shevardnadze stated that he feels responsibility to make such a warning now, when the political forces acting in populism manner are getting more influential.

He called the population to be careful and recalled French experience when far-right Jean-Marie Le Pen almost celebrated victory.

President’s speech was more pre-election (local elections scheduled for June 2) address than that dedicated to the Independence Day.
