Talks in Moscow Concerning Abkhazia

(Tbilisi, June 1, Civil Georgia) – Prime Minister of unrecognized Abkhazian Republic Anri Jergenia held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov on May 31.

At talks parties discussed situation in the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict zone and the document adopted by the UN Security Council on “Basic Principles for the Distribution of Competences between Tbilisi and Sukhumi [capital of breakaway Republic of Abkhazia],” which aims to facilitate UN-led negotiations between the parties on the status of Abkhazia within the State of Georgia.

The ways of implementation of the document’s provisions were also discussed at the meeting of the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Valeri Loshchinin and the representatives of the UN Secretary General’s Group of Friends on Georgia (Germany, France, Great Britain, Russia and the United States) on May 31.

The document details remain confidential, but Georgian officials hail its provisions that consider Abkhazia as a part of the Georgian state.
