Locals Turned into Political Show – Shevardnadze Says

(Tbilisi, June 10, Civil Georgia) – “Some of the parties did everything to turn the local self-governance elections into political show, it is a pity,” President Shevardnadze stated in his traditional Monday radiobroadcast on June 10.

Eduard Shevardnadze said that the pre-election slogans of several parties had nothing common with the municipal problems that must be solved through the local elections. Mikheil Saakashvili’s National Movement had a slogan ‘Georgia without Shevardnadze.’

“Political turmoil before and after the elections discredited idea of local self-governance,” Shevardnadze stated.

He said that the local self-governance should not be regarded as a basis for the taking over the government in the future. “The party thinking this way does not thinks about the population,” Shevardnadze said.

“Politicization of the locals is inadmissible,” the Georgian President stated.
