Georgian Territory Bombed

(Tbilisi, Civil Georgia, July 29, 2002) – Georgian Border Guard Department reports fighter helicopters violated Georgian airspace bombing territory causing no casualties on July 29. According to the report helicopters entered from Russia above the border with Chechnya.

The bombardment comes as the Russian troops combat Chechen fighters rebel Chechen Republic near the Georgian border. Russians claim Chechen fighters infiltrated from Georgia’s troubled Pankisi gorge to the Russian Federation. Georgia denies report.

Today Georgian State Security Minister Valeri Khaburdzania stated that there is no threat of spreading armed clashes that occur near border on the Georgian territory.
