One More Suspect Arrested in Pankisi Gorge

(Tbilisi, September 2, 2002, Civil Georgia) – Georgian law enforcers arrested one more suspect as a result of anti-criminal operation in Pankisi gorge. According to TV company Rustavi 2, the suspect was detained in Jokhola village but his identity is not known yet. 

Second phase of anti-criminal operation started in Pankisi gorge today, which considers accumulating concrete information and investigating. Everybody’s passports are checked and civilians are not allowed to enter the gorge.

Anti-criminal operation was launched in Pankisi gorge on August 25. Internal forces, special units of State Security and Internal Ministries participate in it.

President Shevardnadze pointed out in today’s radio interview that the operation develops as planned and there is no need for other states’ involvement.
