Parliamentary Chairperson Meets NGOs on ITERA Deal

(Tbilisi, September 2, 2002, Civil Georgia) – “It is hard to imagine how the President can neglect Georgian economic independence”, Nino Burjanadze, Parliamentary Chairperson stated today while meeting Georgian NGO representatives. Burjanadze spoke about the possibilities of the Russian gas company ITERA’s takeover of Tbilisi gas distribution network.

According to the Parliamentary Chairperson, basic economic leverage should remain in hands of the government and Georgia should be able to control its own economy.

The NGO representatives expressed dissatisfaction towards the fact that Russian energy company ITERA intends to take-over Georgian Tbilisi gas network. Concerns were also voiced on the possible increase of the electricity tarriffs by the AES-Telasi.

The NGO representatives stated that they intend to sue the U.S. company AES for increased tarrifs.

It was pointed out at the meeting that “a list of strategic energy providers should be made which would remain under state control”.
