ECHR Urges Georgia for Further Suspension of Chechens’ Extradition

(Tbilisi, November 9, Civil Georgia) – The European Court of Human Rights decided that the interim measures concerning the Chechens, allegedly militants detained in Georgia should remain in forcer until midnight on November 26, Press Office of the Council of Europe reports.

Before this date the ECHR urges Georgia to suspend the extradition of 8 Chechens detained by the Georgian border guards and wanted by Russia.

The Court indicated to the Georgian Government not to extradite Chechens to Russia until the Court had had an opportunity to examine the case in the light of further information, which was needed, about the detainees’ situation. 

Georgia has already handed over 5 Chechens out of 13 detained in near the Russian border early in August. Russia demands from Georgia extradition of remaining 8 detainees.
