MPs Slam Government for Energy Crisis

(Tbilisi, Civil Georgia, December 5, 2002) – Irakli Chubinishvili, chairman of the Parliamentary investigative commission on energy crisis reported to the Parliament today information regarding the reasons of energy crises in the country.

In the report there were evidences proving that many high officials in the illegal activity and corruption in the energy sector that led to the crises.

Irakli Chubinishvili stated that at least USD 1 billion is needed to rehabilitate the Georgian energy sector.

He said that tens of the million dollars granted by the foreign donors for the Georgian energy disappeared because of the huge corruption in the sector. The data of the report alarmed the MPs.   

Some of the opposition factions demand resignation of the Minister of Energy and Fuel Davit Mirtskhulava, while others claim that the entire government together with President Shevardnadze is responsible for the energy crises.
