Anti-Crime Operation in Capital City

(Tbilisi, Civil Georgia, December 7, 2002) – “Criminal situation in Georgian capital Tbilisi is so grave that we are facing a threat of catastrophe,” Nika Laliashili, Spokesman for the Georgian State Security Ministry said at the special briefing today.

Georgian law enforcers have already launched the anti-criminal operation in Tbilisi concerning the crime rate rise.

“We will probe all the suspicious person, who might be in Georgia illegally. We check their visas and passports,” Laliashvili said.

This mainly implies to the ethnic Chechens living in Tbilisi. Human rights organizations have already voiced their concern regarding the fact.

“The operation is held with the respect of the human rights,” Security Ministry official said. Though he admitted that to protect “human rights in such a grave situation is too difficult.”
