Approval of New MP’s Credential Causes NGO’s Protest

(Tbilisi, January 17, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Parliament approved today MP credential of Roland Mgaloblishvili, which according to the Central Election Commission (CEC) was elected during the MP by-election in Rustavi city on November 30.

The election watchdog NGO International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy (ISFED) claims that the Parliament’s decision is illegal. Today the Supreme Court discusses the ISFED’s appeal to cancel the results of the Rustavi by-election. NGO says the elections should be announced invalid because of the law turnout of the voters.

“The Parliament should have waited for the Supreme Court’s decision,” Zurab Tchiaberashvili of ISFED told Civil Georgia today while commenting Parliament’s decision.

This is the second discussion of the case by the Supreme Court. Earlier the Court requested the CEC to reconsider the issue of validity of Rustavi by-election. After that the CEC for the second time announced the election as valid.
