Revival Parliamentary Faction Proposes to Create Free Trade Areas
(Tbilisi, January 29, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Parliamentary faction Revival backed by the leader of the Adjarian Autonomous Republic Aslan Abashidze, proposed the Parliament today draft law considering creation of the free trade areas in Georgia.
Authorities of the Autonomous Republic pushed the issue in 1997 but failed to convince the Parliament to adopt the draft law. In 1997 MPs and Georgian authorities feared that the creation of the free trade zone in Batumi, capital city of Adjara would increase Autonomous Republic’s economic independence.
“The draft considers creation of the free trade areas not only in Batumi. This kind of zone will be formed in Poti [port at Black Sea] as well,” Jemal Gogitidze, leader of the Revival faction said.
