Azerbaijan Ready to Consider Sending Peacekeepers to Abkhazia
(Tbilisi February 3, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Azerbaijani media sources report quoting Azerbaijani Ambassador to Georgia Hasan Hajiyev, that in case of Georgian government’s request Azerbaijan may consider dispatching of its peacekeepers in Abkhazian conflict zone.
“Azerbaijan is aware of separatism,” Hajiyev said. “Baku supports a peace process in Abkhazia as well as in other regional disputes,” he added.
Russian peacekeeping forces are deployed in the conflict zone under the auspices of the Commonwealth of Independent States since 1994. Georgian authorities accuse Russian peacekeepers in favoring Abkhaz separatists.
Ukraine also expressed readiness to send its peacekeepers in the conflict zone only in case the peacekeeping operation is run under the UN aegis.
