US Concerned with Violation of Georgians Rights in Gali
(Tbilisi February 8, 2003. Civil Georgia) – US diplomat at the OSCE Permanent Council Douglas A. Davidson said on February 6 called for “a speedy opening of a Human Rights Office in the Gali district,” Georgia’s breakaway Abkhazia, which is populated with the ethnic Georgian residents.
“Regarding Abkhazia, I will limit myself to expressing deep concern over the treatment of ethnic Georgian residents of the Gali district,” Deputy Head of the US Delegation at OSCE said in Vienna.
Georgian authorities are concerned with continues mop-up operations carried out by the Abkhaz forces against the Georgian residents of Gali district. Georgia wants to expand Russian peacekeepers’ mandate on entire Gali, thus guarantee security of the Georgians living in this part of the breakaway region.
