US Envoy met IDPs from Abkhazia
(Tbilisi February 19, 2003. Civil Georgia) – US ambassador in Georgia Richard Miles held meeting with the organizers of the IDP protest rally at the Enguri rive (administrative border between breakaway Abkhazia and the rest of Georgia) on February 19 in the State Chancellery.
Georgian State Minister Avtandil Jorbenadze also attended the meeting.
After the meeting representatives of the IDPs told the reporters that the US envoy promised that the US administration would be actively involved in Abkhazian conflict settlement.
IDPs? protest rally demanded to withdraw Russian peacekeepers from the conflict zone. The US Department of State issued statement last week recommending the Georgian authorities to prolong the Russian peacekeepers? mandate for another six-month. The mandate was prolonged on February 17.
After the meeting IDPs agreed to suspend the protest rally temporarily.
