Law Enforcers Criticized in Public Defender’s Report

(Tbilisi February 20, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Public Defender Nana Devdariani delivered report to the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights regarding the human rights record in the country in the first half of 2002.

Public Defender emphasized in her report on the law enforcement agencies inactivity to protect the religious minorities and punish those responsible for the violent attacks against the religious minorities.

Nana Devdariani also expressed concern regarding the numerous facts of violation of human rights by the police against the detainees in the police departments. 

Newly appointed Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights Nana Bichiashvili called the Public Defender for the close cooperation with the Committee and to propose the draft laws that would help in fight against the human rights violations.

Nana Bichiashvili refrained to make any detail comment regarding the report and explained that she is “newly appointed.”
