Parliament Approves Critical Opposition Proposal

(Tbilisi. February 28, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Georgian Parliament has approved 90 votes to none proposal of the United Democrats faction to increase the minimal salary to 115 Lari. The proposal formed a linchpin of the United Democrats pre-election campaign.

The government strongly opposed the decision, arguing it was not economically feasible. Zurab Zhvania, leader of the United Democrats presented the MPs with his calculations on budgetary feasibility.

Pro-governmental factions “Alliance” and “Socialists” have boycotted the voting. The opposition factions as well as “Revival” voted for.
