Parliament Postpones Ratification of US-Georgian Military Agreement
(Tbilisi. March 1, 2003. Civil Georgia) -After heated discussions Georgian Parliament failed on February 27 to ratify US-Georgian military agreement signed in December 2002.
According to the agreement U.S. military personnel should be permitted to enter Georgia without visas. The agreement would also allow such personnel to carry personal weapons.
The agreement also envisages granting partial diplomatic immunity to the US military personnel on duty in the country.
The Revival Union and Industrialists factions, as well as some MPs objected to these provisions of the agreement.
MPs agreed to postpone ratification of the agreement and requested the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Relations and the Foreign Ministry to improve the document.
