Police Chiefs Vow to Curb Crime

(Tbilisi. March 6, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Deputy Interior Minister and Tbilisi Police Chief dismissed today capital city Council Chairman Mikheil Saakashvili?s allegations that the law enforcers do nothing to improve crime situation in Tbilisi.

?The number of the investigated criminal cases exceeds the same data of the previous year. This is the main indicator of our work,? Levan Maisuradze, Tbilisi Police Chief said at the news briefing today.

?Politicians try to gain popularity with criticizing the law enforcers,? Zurab Chkhaidze, Deputy Interior Minister said at the news briefing.

?In case the crime rate is not reduced within one month I will request the President to dismiss Interior Minister [Koba Narchemashvili],? Mikheil Saakashvili, leader of the opposition National Movement and the city Council Chairman said on March 5.

Tbilisi Police Chief said that it is impossible to improve criminal situation within the month, but ?we are do our best to fight against the crime,? he added.
