President Attended Ecumenical Prayer

(Tbilisi. March 14, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze attended the ecumenical prayer of Christian denominations gathered at the Evangelical-Baptist Church in Tbilisi on March 14.

?I am Orthodox, but we all are Christians,? Eduard Shevardnadze addressed the people gathered at the ecumenical prayer.

Georgian authorities are harshly criticized by the human rights advocacy organization for failing to curb the religious violence.

During the meeting with representatives of the religious minorities in Evangelical-Baptist Church on February 18, the State Minister Avtandil Jorbenadze presented apologies of the government on behalf of the President Eduard Shevardnadze for outbreak of violence against religious minorities in the country.

Excommunicated Orthodox priest Basil Mkalavishvili assailed representatives of the various Christian denominations gathered ecumenical prayers in the Evangelical-Baptist Church in Tbilisi on January 24.
