GIOC President Vows Environment to Be Protected

(Tbilisi. March 21, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Caucasus Environmental NGO Network reported today that the President of the Georgian International Oil Corporation Giorgi Chanturia said that protection of the environment would be one of the most important issues in construction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) oil pipeline.

Environmental organizations are concerned with the fragile ecology of Borjomi valley and demanded to change the route.

Giorgi Chanturia said that the route couldn’t be changed because of the security reasons. Some of the environmental organizations proposed to construct the pipe via Akhalkalaki, where the Russian military base is deployed, that is the source of concern.
