Energy Crisis Continues Despite Resumption of Russian Electricity Supply

(Tbilisi. March 26, 2003. Civil Georgia) – High voltage power line Kavkasioni used for supply of electricity from Russia to Georgia was restored today.

The damage of the power line caused extreme shortage of electricity in Georgian capita Tbilisi and in the regions.

Despite restoration of the vital power line energy crisis in the capital city continues as AES-Telasi, US company distributing electricity in Tbilisi, shut down one of its power pants.

AES-Telasi claims the Georgian government failed to fulfill its commitment to transfer 900,000 Lari necessary for the gas purchase for the power plant. Operation

At the government’s meeting today President Shevardnadze criticized AES-Telasi’s decision and ordered the Fuel-Energy Minister Davit Mirtskhulava to solve the problem with the US company and improve electricity supply to the capital city.

The number of MPs slammed today the Fuel-Energy Minister and the government for the energy crisis.
