Government Discussed Proposal on Lifting of Officials’ Immunity
(Tbilisi. April 2, 2003. Civil Georgia) – The government’s meeting on April 2 discussed the Justice Ministry’s proposal, which considers lifting of immunity from the detectives and prosecutors. The draft also considers restriction of MPs’ immunity.
Interior Minister Koba Narchemashvili said after the government’s meeting that lifting of immunity would hinder work of detectives.
President Shevardnadze said at the government’s meeting that the draft does not specify what the restriction of MPs’ immunity means. President said that he would support lifting of immunity from the MPs as well.
“The majority of Parliamentarians are very honest, but there are MPs which will misuse their immunity to avoid punishment. The issue is very important especially on the eve of the upcoming Parliamentary elections,” Eduard Shevardnadze said.
