MoD Wants to Increase Military Fee for Bailing Out from Compulsory Service

(Tbilisi. May 2, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Parliamentary Committee for Defense and Security discusses today amendments to the law on military service aiming to increase military fee, which allows bailing out from compulsory service.

At the moment each person could pay a fee of 200 GEL (approximately USD 95) to delay the service for a year. The Ministry of Defense (MoD) hoped to increase income in budget with this law, which was adopted last summer.

However the failed conscription in 2003 and the low incomes made the MoD and the Parliamentary Committee for Defense and Security to amend the law.

Parliamentary Committee and the MoD want to increase the military fee from 200 GEL to 600-1000 GEL, the exact amount is not fixed yet.
