Some NGOs Support Composition of CEC with Foreign Experts

(Tbilisi, May 9, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Human rights advocacy NGOs, including Georgian Young Lawyers Association and Liberty Institute supported today the proposal of the opposition National Movement party to compose the Central Election Commission (CEC) with the foreign experts.

Leader of the National Movement and the Chairman of Tbilisi City Council Mikheil Saakashvili suggested composing the CEC with the representatives of those international organizations, with which Georgia has close ties.

The pro-governmental parties went strongly against the initiative.

“It is dishonoring proposal. If we agree to consider it, we would admit that there are no decent people, who deservers our trust. I am confident that there are such people in Georgia and we definitely do not need help of foreign experts,” Avtandil Jorbenadze, the State Minister and one of the leaders of the Presidential-backed election alliance said.
