Council of Europe Inspecting Fulfillment of Obligations by Georgia
(Tbilisi, May 30 2003, Civil Georgia) The Council of Europe delegation is paying a two-day visit to Georgia to inspect the fulfillment of the obligations undertaken by Georgia before the international organizations. The members of the Political Department of the Council of Europe Secretariat met with Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze today.
During the meeting the sides drew attention to the upcoming parliamentary elections, the implementation of reforms in the law-enforcement bodies and the struggle against corruption and criminal offences.
The head of the delegation John Luis Lorentz said the Council of Europe intends to observe the elections in the country. At the same time, he expressed concern about Georgia’s failure to ratify the Convention on National Minorities. John Luis Lorentz accused definite forces of deliberate hindering the ratification.
The Council of Europe delegation will also hold meetings with other representatives of the Georgian government. The visit will end on May 31.
