Residents of Mountainous Region formed Unit to Protect Border with Russia
(Tbilisi, June 17 2003, Civil Georgia) – The battalion composed of local residents of Svaneti, region in north-western Georgia, which voluntarily drafted for the military service, has undergone training and will leave for Svaneti to control the northern borders of Georgia.
According to the Ministry of Defense (MoD) the battalion consists of about 200 volunteers, who have undergone three-week training on the Orkhevi military base in Tbilisi.
The MoD has already formed the similar military unit, composed with the residents of Khevsureti region, near the Chechen and Ingush section of the Russian-Georgian border.
