Shevardnadze to Convene Special Parliamentary Session Over Election Code
(Tbilisi, June 23, 2003, Civil Georgia) – Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze considers necessary to convene a special session of the Parliament in the near future, since, as he said the Parliament has left issue of election code unsolved.
?I do not mean only amending the election code. There are many other unsolved problems. Thus special session is necessary. There is no time to be lost,? President Shevardnadze said in his radio broadcast today.
Shevardnadze hopes the Parliament will reach a consensus regarding the election code and composition of the Central Election Commission. He said, the pro-governmental factions are not interested in having the majority in the commission.
?We should put an end to the slander towards the pro-governmental factions concerning ballot fraud. The both sides should make a compromise,? says Shevardnadze.
According to him, the court and the foreign observers should play a great role in the elections.
