Alleged Kidnapper Arrested in Moscow

(Tbilisi, June 25, 2003, Civil Georgia) – Georgian law enforcers, in cooperation with the Russian counterparts detained Shota Chichiashvili in Moscow on June 24, which is suspected in high-profile kidnappings in Georgia in the recent years.

“He is suspected in masterminding of abduction of two Spanish businessmen, British banker Peter Shaw and in other high-profile kidnappings in Georgia,” Paata Gomelauri, Spokesman for the Georgian Interior Ministry told Civil Georgia.

Chichiashvili, 28, is wanted by the Georgian law enforcers since 1997. He is resident of Pankisi gorge. According to the Interior Ministry Chichiashvili led a group of criminals, which was organizing kidnappings.

Georgian General Prosecutor Nugzar Gabrichidze told the reporters that Chichiashvili will be extradited to Georgia in the nearest days.

On June 23 law enforcers detained Alen Borchashvili, member of the Chichiashvili’s criminal group in Pankisi gorge. Earlier law enforcer arrested three other members of this group in the gorge.
