President’s Spokesman Denies Shevardnadze is Against IMF

(Tbilisi, June 26, 2003, Civil Georgia) – “The statement made by Eduard Shevardnadze at the government session yesterday is in no way directed against the activity of the International Monetary Fund”, Kakha Imnadze, Georgian President’s Spokesman said today.

At a June 25 government session Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze commented harshly on possible suspension of IMF’s programs in Georgia, claiming the fund has no real ground for it. Shevardnadze said he would raise this issue at the session of the UN General Assembly in September.

At the moment the IMF Mission, which arrived in Georgia on June 24 to assess the fulfillment of the fund’s recommendations by the Georgian government, is holding meetings in the State Chancellery [President’s administration].
