Foreign Minister Briefed MPs Over Abkhazia

(Tbilisi, July 1, 2003, Civil Georgia) – Foreign Minister Irakli Menagharishvili met today with the MPs representing the Abkhazia government-in-exile.

Menagharishvili briefed the MPs regarding the ongoing developments regarding the settlement of the Abkhaz conflict, particularly on Georgian authorities? decision to prolong the Russian peacekeepers mandate in Abkhazia .

This decision was met with protest by the Abkhaz government-in-exile.

After the meeting Foreign Minister Menagharishvili told the reporters that the talks continue regarding the return of the IDPs to Gali district of Abkhazia. Restoration of the railway link between Georgia and Russia though Abkhazia is also being discussed. He reiterated that the railway in Abkhazia will be restored only after safe return of IDPs is ensured.
