Opposition Proposes New Draft on CEC
(Tbilisi, July 1, 2003, Civil Georgia) – The parliamentary opposition parties today agreed on the new rule of composition of the Central Election Commission, according to which the commission will consist of 15 members.
Each party, which cleared 7% barrier during the 1999 parliamentary elections, will appoint two members to the CEC, while those, which cleared 4% barrier in 2002 local elections, will appoint one member. The President will nominate two members, and the authorities of the Autonomous Republics of Abkhazia (in exile) and Adjara will appoint one member each.
Thus according to the opposition draft 10 members of the CEC will be from opposition parties and only 5 members of the commission will be loyal to President.
The opposition intends to submit the draft to the President as soon as possible. Nino Burjanadze, Parliamentary Chairperson told the reporters after the consultation with opposition parties that she intends to mediate arranging of the meeting between Shevardnadze and the opposition.
