Zhvania Blames Shevardnadze for Failure to Adopt Election Code

(Tbilisi, July 31, 2003, Civil Georgia) – Leader of the opposition United Democrats party Zurab Zhvania accused President Shevardnadze of hindering the voting over the new Election Code by second hearing.

“After the President denied our proposal to hold talks, it became evident that Shevardnadze gave a go-ahead to the pro-governmental factions to reject already approved [by first hearing] draft Election Code,” Zurab Zhvania said at the news briefing on July 31.

The opposition factions asked the President to meet with them, after it became clear that the pro-Presidential factions !
intended to vote against the code.

Spokesman for the President of Georgia Kakha Imnadze said on July 31 the issue should be discussed in the Parliament first.

The Parliament plans to continue discussion of the Election Code at the special session today.
