US Senator Calls for Baker’s Plan Endorsement

(Tbilisi, August 1, 2003, Civil Georgia) – US Senator John McCain released a statement on July 31, in which he expressed support to the efforts of the Parliament of Georgia to adopt a new election code, considering implementation of Baker’s plan on composition of the Central Election Commission (CEC).

Although the Election Code was adopted by the first hearing, the US Senator fears that the Parliament will fail to adopt it by the second and third hearings.

John McCain supports the !
Election Code based on Baker’s plan, implying the rule of composition of the CEC on a parity basis. He says any attempt of the opposition or pro-governmental parties to violate a parity principle will pose a serious threat to the parliamentary elections scheduled for November 2.

The Parliament rejected on July 31 by second hearing the rule of composition of the Central Election Commission, as pro-Presidential factions, as well as Revival and Industrialists voted against.
