Parliament Approved Election Code

(Tbilisi, August 15, 2003, Civil Georgia) – Parliament approved late on August 14 amendments to the election code, considering broad anti-fraud measures for the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for November 2.

However, despite election observer NGOs demands, Parliament failed to endorse a proposal, which prohibited the acting members of the Central Election Commission (CEC) to be elected in the new commission. The part of the pro-Presidential parliamentary factions, as well as the Revival Union voted against the proposal.

“The OSCE [according to the adopted code the organization will!
nominate the Chairman of the CEC] will refuse to participate in the composition of the CEC in case we reject this proposal,” Nino Burjanadze, Parliamentary Chairperson warned the MPs before the voting.
