Governmental Official Faces Kidnapping Charge

(Tbilisi, August 18, 2003, Civil Georgia) – Deputy Head of the penitentiary system Merab Zhubitidze was arrested today for alleged links with kidnapping of Beka Mumladze, 17, last month.

Interior Minister Koba Narchemashvili said at the news briefing today that Beka Mumladze’s parents paid USD 70.000 for his release.

Police say that 17-year-old boy was chained for 43 days in one of the apartment buildings in the center of Tbilisi.
