Hostage Drama Ends as Authorities Promise to Provide IDPs with Apartment

(Tbilisi, August 21, 2003, Civil Georgia) – Up to dozen of internally displaced persons from Abkhazia released late on August 20 chief of the state-owned Metromsheni company, who was held in hostage for whole day, after the authorities promised to provide the IDPs with apartment buildings.

In the morning on August 20 IDPs, basically women, seized in Tbilisi the city’s metropolitan construction company?s office and captured the chief of the company. 

They demanded the building for!
habitation. The women poured gasoline and threatened to set themselves afire.

After the talks with the representatives of the Tbilisi-based Abkhaz government-in-exile, who promised IDPs to provide with the apartment buildings, displaced persons released a hostage and left the building.
