Burjanadze, Zhvania Offer Radical Changes

(Tbilisi, August 22, 2003, Civil Georgia) – The new election alliance “Burjanadze – Democrats”, formed by Zurab Zhvania’s United Democrats opposition party and Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze, today started the pre-election campaign from the western Georgian town of Zugdidi.

“We can help the country out of the crisis,” said the Parliamentary Chairperson, while addressing the Zugdidi residents.

Speaking about the future plans, Zhvania and Burjanadze s!
tressed their support to radical changes, which imply the reshuffle of the present pro-presidential authorities.

The leaders of the election alliance said their bloc would be enlarged by new figures, such as Lado Papava, the ex-minister of economy, Shota Gvenetadze of the Young Economists Association of Georgia and Giorgi Margvelashvili, the director of the Georgian Institute for Public Affairs (GIPA).

Zurab Zhvania said they started pre-election campaign from Zugdidi, because this has already become a tradition for him.

“I started election campaign from Zugdidi, while being the leader of the Green Party [in early 90s] and later when I was one of the leaders of the Citizens’ Union of Georgia and every time I achieved success in elections. We hope to win these elections as well,” Zhvania said.
