President Urges Svaneti Population to Support Anti-Crime Operation

(Tbilisi, August 28, 2003, Civil Georgia) – Georgian President Shevardnadze appealed to the local population of the mountainous region of Svaneti in northwestern Georgia to support a planned anti-crime operation in the region.

In his appeal Eduard Shevardnadze says that the crime rate has reached an alarming scale. “Measures against the criminal gangs will be carried out in accordance with the law. This should become the guarantee of stability in the region,” Shevardnadze says.

President Shevardnadze urged the law-enforcement bodies to restore!
order in the region at the government’s session on August 20.
