Regional Court Ruled Positively on Pensioners’ Appeal

(Tbilisi, September 2, 2003, Civil Georgia) – A court in Kaspi, central Georgia ruled positively on the appeal of 300 local pensioners demanding that the government repay their pension backlog from 1998-2000.

The opposition party National Movement initiated the lawsuit. The Finance Ministry has the right to appeal to the higher court within the month.

“We should appreciate this decision of the judge, because the authorities mounted pressure on the judges, demanding them to reject any appeal on repayment of the pension backlog,” MP Koba Davitashvili of the National !
Movement said today.

In April a court in Samtredia (western Georgia), and later a court in Kutaisi also ruled positively on pensioners’ appeals demanding repayment of their pensions.

President Shevardnadze in July expressed concern over these court decisions and called on judges to reject lawsuits regarding pension debt repayment.
