Shevardnadze Wants to Enforce Law on Manifestations
President Shevardnadze said the law on manifestations, which was adopted in 1997 by the Parliament of Georgia, should be enforced as soon as possible.
According to the law, the authorities should be notified about holding of election campaigns and public meetings two days ahead.
“The elections should be held with full observance of laws and the constitution. We should respect the laws, which regulate the relationship between the authorities and the political parties during the elections in the country,” Shevardnadze said at a news briefing on September 6.
The opposition parties regard enforcement of the law as a mean to restrain their election campaign.
