Supreme Court Cancels Rustavi By-Election Results

(Tbilisi, January 18, Civil Georgia) – Georgian Supreme Court ruled positively on election watchdog NGO International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy’s (ISFED) appeal and canceled result of MP by-election in Rustavi city on January 17.

Earlier on same day – January 17, Parliament approved MP credential of Roland Mgaloblishvili, which according to the Central Election Commission (CEC) was elected during the MP by-election in Rustavi city on November 30, despite opposition’s demand to wait till the Supreme Court’s decision.

“The Parliament should have waited for the Supreme Court’s decision,” Zurab Tchiaberashvili of ISFED told Civil Georgia today while commenting Parliament’s decision.

The ISFED claims that by-election is Rustavi was invalid because of the law turnout of the voters.
